Hyrax device
Everything you need to know about palatal dilatation!

What does a palatal expander look like?
It is a fixed appliance, which is fixed to the upper side teeth, with a screw in the middle to be activated at home in the mouth. The number of activations (rolls) and the extent of the activation are always precisely determined. Usually 1-2 weeks are sufficient to achieve a satisfactory result.
At the end of the time, the device is fixed, the screw is closed and left in the mouth without activation for a few months until the results are stabilised.

How does a palatal dilator work?
The expansion of the palate should be done as young as possible, because at this age the so-called sutures connecting the bones of the skull have not yet ossified and can be easily stretched in their connective tissue state.
The upper dental arch develops from two halves and is joined by a suture in the middle of the palate. When the palate is dilated, this suture is stretched, so that the maxillary arch and maxilla can be expanded and widened bonyly. This makes it easy to manage crossbite and creates space in the dental arch to relieve congestion and align teeth.
The device is activated for 1-2 weeks. During this time, a gap opens between the two upper incisors. This will let us know that the device is working well and that a bony expansion is indeed taking place. This gap will close spontaneously in 2-3 months.
Possibilities for mouth expansion in adulthood
In adults, the suture described above is less connective tissue, so we used to have surgically assisted solutions. Fortunately, today's modern orthodontics offers other non-surgical solutions. This solution is the Hybrid Hyrax. To optimise the force transmission, small screws are used to fix the palatal expander itself. This avoids any overloading of the teeth or unwanted chipping.
An added advantage is that we can also treat patients who have problems with anchoring, such as when there is a tooth deficiency or weakened dentition due to periodontal disease.
After the active expansion (1-3 weeks), orthodontic treatment can begin by aligning the teeth.
