"...I also help children/adults to develop correct posture, breathing and muscle tone." Final Sára
I've been in the industry for eight years, and in that time I've gained experience in a wide range of areas. Initially I worked in early childhood development, supporting the communication and speech development of the youngest children. Later, I worked in child protection, where I encountered complex challenges and became even more aware of the power of good communication and a supportive environment.
I then worked in several institutions, working with children from different backgrounds and with different needs. Some specialised exclusively in the development of children with special educational needs, and I have also been involved in speech and language therapy for children in mainstream institutions.
What is the impact of speech therapy? What can it help with orthodontics?
Over the years, I have attended several training courses to provide more complex support to the children who come to me. I was very impressed by Zsuzsa Ruda's "3X5 Method" tongue thrust swallowing therapy, whose methodology has been so influential that it has remained one of my favourite therapies ever since.
Swallowing with tongue thrust is not just a bad habit, but a complex functional problem that can affect dentition, speech clarity and breathing patterns. If the resting position and movement pattern of the tongue deviates from the ideal one, it can lead to long-term problems with correct voice production, jaw pain, bite disorders and even breathing problems. In therapy work, I not only teach the correct function of the tongue, but also help children/adults to develop correct posture, breathing and muscle tone, taking into account the whole body function.

Frequently asked questions
A speech and language therapist is responsible for the recognition, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders. Speech and language therapists can work with people of many ages - from young children to the elderly - always tailored to individual needs. The role of the speech and language therapist is very important in orthodontic treatment, because a beautiful set of teeth will only last if the muscles around them are working properly. In other words, the "invisible collaborator" of orthodontics, who teaches the muscles to "work together" again to produce beautifully aligned teeth. Even the most beautiful smile will be complete if the functions behind it are in order: swallowing, speaking, breathing.
In tongue thrust swallowing therapy, the main task of the speech therapist is to reprogram the maloccupied swallowing pattern and teach the tongue, lips and jaw to function harmoniously. This is often not only about swallowing, but also about speech sound formation, breathing and posture.
Therapy starts with a history and observation of swallowing-related functions (tongue position, breathing, muscle function). Then we strengthen and develop the tongue, lips and chewing muscles with oromotor exercises. Next, the correct swallowing process is taught and gradually automated. At the end of the therapy, a control session is also held to reassess the established swallowing pattern. This will help to confirm the established functions and, if necessary, we will suggest maintenance exercises or further improvement.
Therapy sessions are 40-45 minutes long and take place on a weekly basis. The total duration of treatment is about three months.
In tongue thrust therapy, the incorrect swallowing pattern - where the tongue is thrust forward - is gradually corrected. The aim is to help the tongue learn the correct resting position and to ensure that the swallowing motion is automatically and correctly locked. By the end of the therapy, the correct pattern is incorporated into everyday functioning, supporting speech, breathing and dental health.
At the beginning of the class, we will activate the shoulder and back muscles with some movement exercises, promoting body awareness and proper muscle function. Then we will strengthen the muscles around the mouth, the tongue and the jaw, step by step, with exercises in front of a mirror. Each exercise specifically develops proper muscle function and coordination, helping to optimize swallowing and speech functions. At the end of the session, we conclude with breathing exercises that promote relaxation and the learning of proper breathing techniques.
