#1 Personal consultation
The adult orthodontic treatment process starts with a personal consultation, during which we get to know each other and perform a comprehensive examination. We start with an aesthetic examination of the face, then we look at the position of the teeth, the shape of the dental arches, the bite and the patient's smile. Dynamic tests are necessary to check the movement of the jaw joints and the function of the facial muscles. X-rays are also taken if necessary.
On the basis of the information gathered, we will discuss treatment options, present the orthodontic appliances. We explain in detail the advantages, disadvantages and specific features of the different devices.
We will guide you through the steps of the treatment, from the treatment procedure to the removal of the device and the start of the retention phase. We will discuss everything additional equipment needed, the stages of treatment and how to negotiate costs.
The aim of the first appointment is to fully explain everything about the adult orthodontic treatment process, the expected treatment time, the orthodontic appliances available and the cost of treatment.
One of the keys to successful treatment is proper cooperation, and this is of paramount importance to me, so please do not hesitate to ask if you have any unanswered questions.
#2 Diagnosis and treatment plan
As the treatment is primarily determined by facial aesthetics, we use facial photographs to examine symmetries, profile, midface, lip profile, etc.
We document the shape of the dental arches and their relationship to each other with mouth photos, from the dental arches we also take an impression.
The adult orthodontic procedure is also when the teeth, the roots of the teeth and the jaw joints are examined on a panoramic X-ray. The lateral skull X-ray provides information about the position of the anterior teeth axis and the position of the jaw bones in relation to each other and to the arch.
In some cases, a CT scan is taken to show the dental arches, jawbones and jaw joints in three dimensions.
Planning is an essential stage in the adult orthodontic treatment process
During the planning phase, it is essential to make an accurate diagnosis in all directions. Based on the summarized data, a detailed individual treatment plan is prepared, which takes into account facial and smile aesthetics, dentition and a functionally well functioning chewing system.
A written orthodontic treatment plan will be sent by e-mail. The treatment plan will always include the possible treatment options, a description of the appliances to be used and a precise price quotation, as well as the orthodontic treatment procedure in bullet points.
#3 Attachment/transfer of devices
One of the main steps in the adult orthodontic treatment process the fitting of orthodontic appliances, always preceded by a professional dental hygiene treatment. This is justified for several reasons: on the one hand, the bonding technique requires tooth surfaces that are completely clean and can be dried, and on the other hand, the health of the gums and periodontium is an essential condition for moving teeth.
The application of braces is a precise process. The brackets are glued to the teeth one by one or with a splint, then the first bracket is attached and you are shown and taught everything about the appliance.
That's it, we'll then meet every four to six weeks to activate your braces and guide your treatment.
