When, after many months or years, the braces are finally removed, most patients feel they can finally breathe a sigh of relief: the perfect smile has arrived, the work is done. The truth, however, is that this is when the second most important \u2013 indeed, lifelong \u2013 phase of orthodontic treatment begins: the retention period<\/b>.<\/p>

But why do you need to wear these plastic aligners? What should you look out for when choosing a retainer, and why are you throwing your money down the drain if you opt for cheaper alternatives? We\u2019d just like to add a personal note for those who are at the start of their treatment, or are only just planning to begin. In many cases, 1\u20131.5 years seems like a very long time, but once you\u2019re in the thick of the treatment and have got used to a dietary routine that\u2019s so beneficial for your health, you\u2019ll hardly want to take off your invisible braces, because you\u2019ll realise just how many additional benefits they bring \u2013 benefits you could never have imagined. The answer can be summed up in a single word: relapse<\/b>. The bone tissue surrounding the teeth and the fibres of the gums have an extremely strong \u201ememory\u201d. Once the braces are removed, the teeth almost immediately try to return to their original, crooked positions. The bone needs time to stabilise in its new position.<\/p>

The retention splint acts as a barrier to prevent this relapse.
